Maximilian I, Holy Roman Emperor, print illustration by an unknown artist, c. 17th century.
Maximilian I (1459-1519) ruled as King of the Romans and Holy Roman Emperor. He was never crowned by a pope, a tradition that set a precedent for future clashes between the imperial and papal authorities. His rule cemented the House of Habsburg as a key player in European politics for centuries to come, laying the groundwork for their vast network of alliances in the Holy Roman Empire and beyond.
