Postern tunnel under Yerkapı, photograph by Alena Belova, Boğazkale, Türkiye, 16 November 2022.
The corbel-vaulted postern tunnel pictured here, about 70 m long, runs beneath the artificial Yerkapı rampart at Hattusa, the Hittite capital in central Türkiye. Built of large stone blocks laid without mortar, it allowed people to pass in and out of the city under the walls (14th-13th century BCE).
