Statue of Katō Kiyomasa, photograph by Jan van der Crabben, Kumamoto, Kumamoto Prefecture, Japan, September 2025.
Katō Kiyomasa (1562-1611) was a Japanese daimyō in the service of Toyotomi Hideyoshi. He was granted half of the Higo Province (in modern-day Kumamoto Prefecture) in 1588 and took over Kumamoto Castle. He was given lordship over the full province after the Battle of Sekigahara (1600) and constructed the present Kumamoto Castle in 1607.
