Keep of Scarborough, Yorkshire, illustration by George Shepherd after William Tombleson, c. 1806-1836.

In the spring of 1312, Piers Gaveston, companion and favourite of Edward II, was besieged at Scarborough Castle, where he soon surrendered to the incensed English nobles hunting him. Prior to his capture, Gaveston had the ear of the king and his patronage, a relationship that sorely embittered the English magnates, leading to rebellion and his ultimate beheading.
