Cintli, ink on parchment, unknown artist, included in the Florentine Codex by Bernardino de Sahagún, Mexico, 1577.

A depiction of a maize plant, one of the staple crops of the Aztec peoples of Mexico. The image shows the structural details of the ear with husk, kernels, and partial stem. The Florentine Codex includes many depictions of maize, featuring it in a number of different aspects of Aztec life.
