Portrait of William Tecumseh Sherman, photograph by Mathew Brady, c. 1860-1865.
Resigning his short-lived position of superintendent at the Louisiana Military Academy, the Ohio-born William Tecumseh Sherman (1820-1891) headed north, away from the seceding South and ultimately to a commission in the Union Army, where he distinguished himself in growing command responsibilities during the American Civil War. Sherman's invasion of Georgia, the taking of Atlanta, and his "March to the Sea" to capture Savannah sounded the death knell of the Confederacy.
