This statue depicts La Malinche, a controversial figure in the history of the conquest of Mexico. Initially enslaved and given to the Spanish as tribute, she eventually served as the key interpreter between the Spanish, led by Hernán Cortés during the Spanish conquest of modern day Mexico.
