Sketch of the Alamo by Mary Ann Maverick, 1838. Published in Rena Maverick Green's Memoirs of Mary A. Maverick, 1921.
This is one of the earliest drawings depicting the Alamo, a Spanish mission that became a fortress garrisoned first by the Spanish, then the Mexican Army after the Mexican War of Independence, and later, most famously, by Texian forces during the Texas Revolution. Their defeat at the Battle of the Alamo spurred both a recruitment surge for Texas independence and a panic for the civilian population, who fled eastward in what became known as the "Runaway Scrape."
