The Marble Lion of Piraeus, book illustration by an unknown artist, included in Antiquités de l'Orient by Carl Christian Rafn, p. 54, Copenhagen, 1856.
This lion is one of several that were brought to Venice from Greece and set outside the Arsenale gates in 1692. On the upper right shoulder of the lion is a runic carving in the shape of a dragon (faint today), thought to be a 10th-century reference to the conquest of an area in Greece. Recent research by Marangon and Fei identifies it as the work of Hakon the warrior (I Graffiti di Venezia L'Arsenale, pp. 59-60)
