The Russian Revolution of 1917 marked the collapse of imperial authority and the emergence of a radically new political order. Years of military defeat, economic strain, and social inequality culminated in the February Revolution (8–16 March 1917; O.S. 23 February–3 March), when mass strikes, food shortages, and army mutinies in Petrograd forced Tsar Nicholas II (reigned 1894–1917) to abdicate, ending more than three centuries of Romanov rule. Power passed to a liberal-led Provisional Government, which pledged reform but failed to withdraw Russia from World War I or address land redistribution, undermining its legitimacy and authority.
The revolutionary crisis deepened with the return of Vladimir Lenin in April 1917 and the growing appeal of the Bolsheviks’ calls for “peace, land, and bread.” In the October Revolution (6–8 November 1917; O.S. 24–26 October), Bolshevik forces seized key institutions in Petrograd and proclaimed a Soviet government, claiming authority through workers’ and soldiers’ councils (soviets). Across the former empire, national movements and regional authorities asserted autonomy or independence, while rival political factions mobilized for power. The revolutions of 1917 dismantled imperial structures, triggered a multi-year civil war (1918–1921), and reshaped Eurasia’s political landscape with the creation of the world’s first socialist state.
