Portrait of an Elizabethan lady, thought to be Penelope Devereux, Lady Rich (1563-1607); sister to Robert Devereux, 2nd Earl of Essex and muse of the poet Sir Philip Sidney, who used her as inspiration for his sonnet sequence Astrophel and Stella. Portrait by Nicholas Hilliard, circa 1589.
