Vaccines are biological interventions that train the immune system to recognize and neutralize pathogens, preventing disease without causing illness. Since the late 18th century, vaccination has become one of the most transformative developments in human history, radically reducing mortality and reshaping public health worldwide. Beginning with the first successful vaccination against smallpox in 1796, immunization introduced a new model of disease prevention, one based not on treatment after infection, but on population-level protection. Over time, this approach proved capable not only of controlling epidemics but, in rare cases, of eliminating diseases entirely.

From the 19th to the 20th century, vaccines expanded in scope alongside advances in microbiology, state-led public health systems, and global cooperation. Immunization campaigns against bacterial and viral diseases dramatically reduced childhood mortality and limited the spread of once-fatal infections across continents. The near-eradication of polio by the late 20th century and the global elimination of smallpox in 1980 demonstrated the unprecedented power of coordinated vaccination efforts. Collectively, these developments reveal how scientific knowledge, government policy, and international collaboration can converge to improve human well-being, making vaccination one of the most effective and enduring tools in the history of medicine.
