Captain Francis De Groot (1888-1969), a member of the fascist New Guard group, rode a borrowed horse and slashed the ribbon with his cavalry sword at the opening ceremony for the Sydney Harbour Bridge (March 19, 1932). It prevented the New South Wales premier, Jack Lang (1876-1975), from the honour of cutting the ceremonial ribbon.
