Photograph of Alfred Warbrick (1860-1940), who saw the eruption of Mount Tarawera in 1886. He assisted with rescue efforts and later went on to become a rugby player and boatbuilder. Warbrick was the son of an English father and a Maori mother. He identified with the Ngāti Rangitihi and Te Arawa iwi.
