A modern statue of the Taino chief Hatuey (d. 1512) who resisted the Spanish conquest of Cuba led by the conquistador Diego Velázquez de Cuéllar (1465-1524) in 1511-13. Hatuey was captured and executed. He was burnt at the stake after refusing to convert to Christianity. Baracoa, Cuba.
