A painting by Charles Landseer, The Eve of the Battle of Edgehill, the first major battle of the English Civil Wars (1642-51). The battle took place on 23 October 1642 between Royalist and Parliamentary forces. The result was indecisive. Standing in the centre is Charles I of England (r. 1625-1649) and seated on the left is his nephew Prince Rupert (1619-82). (Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool)
