In many Mesoamerican cultures, red or yellow dogs were believed to assist the dead in crossing a river to the Underworld. Earthenware effigies, like this one from Colima, Mexico, depicted these dogs. c. 100 BCE-300 CE. Associated with the Comala people. Collection of the Walters Art Museum.
