The Temple of Isis in Pompeii Download Full Size Image

The Temple of Isis in Pompeii dates from the 2nd century BCE and was dedicated to the Egyptian goddess Isis whose cult was widespread throughout the Roman Empire. It was totally rebuilt after the earthquake of 62 CE at the expense of the freedman Numerius Popidius Ampliatus in the name of his six-year-old son Celsinus. The temple, situated in the centre of a porticoed courtyard, stands on a raised podium reached by a staircase at the front.
