Janus was the god of doorways and openings, ends and beginnings. He was associated with time and transitions, ushering in change. He is easily recognizable by his two-faced appearance, gazing in opposite directions simultaneously. Pictured: A Roman period marble head of Janus. (Vatican Museums, Rome)
