Memorial to the Battle of Edington
After leaving the Somerset Marshes in May 878, Alfred defeated the Viking leader Guthrum at the Battle of Edington in Wiltshire. The two leaders then negotiated a peace treaty, with Guthrum and his leading followers converting to Christianity and the Midlands (Mercia) being divided into English and Norse halves.
The Edington monument, constructed from sarsen stone, was erected in 2000 and stands where the battle is believed to have been fought, approximately 2 miles (3.2 km) from the village of Edington, Wiltshire.
It is inscribed with the following: “To commemorate the Battle of Ethandun [Edington] fought in this vicinity May 878 when King Alfred the Great defeated the Viking army, giving birth to the English nationhood."
