An 1881 oil on canvas, Bouquet of Sunflowers , by Claude Monet (1840-1926), the French impressionist painter. The thick brushstrokes are applied to replicate the contours of the flowers and applied so thickly as to create ridges which create their own light and shadow. Shown at the 1882 Impressionist Exhibition in Paris . (Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York)
