Paul Cézanne Self-Portrait
A c. 1880 self-portrait in oils by Paul Cézanne (1839-1906), the French post-impressionist artist. The artist painted himself several times, always honestly and perhaps looking a little grimmer than he really was. The diamond shapes in the wallpaper behind in this example are used to frame the head of Cézanne and the motif is repeated in the cheeks, eyes, jacket, and beard. (National Gallery, London)
