In ancient Greek culture, the symposium was an important gathering for males to socialize together. Because of its homosocial setting and emphasis on intellectual stimulation, it was associated with pederastic relationships. This erotic scene depicts male figures relaxing on a sofa during a symposium. Attributed to the Pistoxenos Painter, c. 470 BCE. Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.
