In this episode of Letters from The Old West featuring William Barret Travis was written and sent out from the Alamo in San Antonio Texas. The Alamo was under siege from dictator Santa Anna. Santa Anna was a cruel and ruthless politician. who would come in and out of power in Mexico. He had declared himself dictator and thrown out the constitution that Mexico had with the Texas settlers. So the promised agreement that brought settlers to Texas to settle was now broken and the Texas settlers had the choice of fight for liberty and freedom or become slaves of a pompous tyrant. Around 185 freedom fighters defended the Alamo with hopes that more troops would come to their aid. So Travis in a plea for help sent this letter to anyone in the world who would fight for liberty. These defenders gave their lives for this cause and because of their bravery and sacrifice Texas became a country of it's own, a Republic winning it's independence from Mexico in 1836 and remaining a country of it's own until entering the United States in 1845 as the 28th state.
