Biography
I have taught Japanese language and culture at the University of Newcastle in Australia for more than thirty years. My initial specialist area was the intellectual history of Japan, especially the life and thought of the Meiji period historian Yamaji Aizan. I have been interested in world history since I was an undergraduate and in my teaching I like to encourage students to think about Japan from a global perspective.
