
Biography
As an author and science journalist, Garry J. Shaw writes for a variety of popular magazines and newspapers, covering archaeology, history, world heritage, exhibitions, and travel. He covers breaking news, and has written features on diverse topics, from the world’s most mysterious manuscripts and the Near East after the Bronze Age collapse, to heritage destruction in Yemen.
In addition to his newest book Cryptic, From Voynich to the Angel Diaries, the Story of the World's Mysterious Manuscripts, Garry is also the author of: The Story of Tutankhamun: An Intimate Life of the Boy Who Became King (2022); Egyptian Mythology: A Traveller's Guide from Aswan to Alexandria (2021); War and Trade with the Pharaohs: An Archaeological Study of Ancient Egypt's Foreign Relations (2017); The Egyptian Myths: A Guide to the Ancient Gods and Legends (2014); and The Pharaoh, Life at Court and on Campaign (2012).
Garry has taught classes at the American University in Cairo, the Bloomsbury Summer School, the Egypt Exploration Society in London, and as a part-time tutor for Oxford University's Department for Continuing Education. As an archaeologist, he has worked with projects in Egypt (at Qantir-Pi-Ramesses in particular), Turkey, and the UK; and his scholarly articles on Egyptian history have been published in peer-reviewed journals.
Garry has spoken about his work on podcasts, TV documentaries, and radio shows, and at book festivals.
