Ulysses S. Grant (1822-1885) was a Union general in the American Civil War and, later, the 18th president of the United States of America. He is generally regarded as the most effective Civil War commander, whose refusal to retreat after engagements contributed significantly to the Union victory in 1865 when Confederate General Robert E. Lee surrendered to Grant at Appomattox Court House.
