Braxton Bragg (1817-1876) was a Confederate general from North Carolina, best known for commanding the Army of Tennessee in the Western Theater of the American Civil War (1861-1865). A strict disciplinarian with a short temper, Bragg was generally despised by his troops, and often quarrelled with his subordinate officers. Though he won the bloody Battle of Chickamauga in September 1863, his military track record contained more stalemates and retreats than victories. As such, he was removed from army command in late November 1863, and was instead assigned to the post of chief military advisor to President Jefferson Davis. Today, Bragg is often ranked by historians as one of the worst generals of the Civil War.
