The Battle of Wilson's Creek (also known as the Battle of Oak Hills, 10 August 1861) was the second major battle of the American Civil War and the first major battle of the Western theater of the war. It was fought at Wilson's Creek near Springfield, Missouri. The engagement ended in a Confederate victory and Union troops retreating from the field. The Confederate forces were too worn out to pursue and finish them, and so this battle is often referred to as the "Bull Run of the West" because its conclusion so closely resembled the First Battle of Bull Run (First Manassas) of 21 July 1861 (see Panic at Bull Run and Losing an Opportunity at Bull Run) and aspects of that engagement, such as confusion over who was friend or enemy due to non-standardized uniforms, also played a part at this one.
