Transfiguration of Christ, painting by Fra Angelico, photograph by Sailko, Florence, 22 July, 2009.

This fresco painted by Fra Angelico in Cell 6 at the Convent of San Marco in Florence, now the San Marco Museum, shows Christ standing on a rock, arms outstretched, prefiguring his own crucifixion, while also prophesying his resurrection, an example of what art historian Diane Cole Ahl calls Angelico’s "condensed, allusive narration.” Angelico painted a series of frescoes throughout the convent, in the cells of the friars, in the corridors, and on the landings, financed by the wealthy Florentine banker Cosimo de’ Medici. The frescoes at the San Marco Museum in Florence remain some of Angelico’s most important work.
