Annunciation with Saint Peter Martyr, painting by Fra Angelico, photograph by Erik Möller, Florence, 19 May, 2005.
In Cell 3 of the San Marco Convent, Fra Angelico painted the Annunciation with Saint Peter the Martyr in 1438 CE. Mary kneels before the Angel Gabriel who has come to tell her that she will give birth to Christ. There is a third figure in this picture, a monk of the Dominican Order, who listens from behind the angel’s wings, hands clasped in prayer. By inserting a non-divine figure into the scene, Angelico invites the viewer to experience the Annunciation first hand, to feel the profoundness of the moment in a personal way, as Angelico himself undoubtedly did.
