Portrait of Admiral Blas de Lezo, oil on canvas painting, c. 1853.
Portrayed here is the Spanish naval officer Blas de Lezo (1689-1741), whose illustrious career saw the loss of his left eye, left leg, and the use of his right arm. Besieged by a British fleet during the War of Jenkins' Ear (1739-1748), Lezo led a stalwart defense of the harbour and city of Cartagena de Indias, in what is now Colombia, forcing the Royal Navy to lift the blockade and withdraw.
