Portrait of John M. Corse, c. 1860-1870.

On 5 October 1864, Brigadier General John Murray Corse (1835-1893), having taken command of the Federal garrison at the Allatoona mountain pass, repulsed a Confederate strike meant to disrupt and ruin Union supply routes. Corse was less a cheekbone and an ear, but the Federal victory at the Battle of Allatoona was to be a harbinger for the Rebels' disastrous Franklin-Nashville Campaign.
