Roman apartment buildings (insulae) in Utica in modern-day Tunisia. Utica, one of Tunisia's oldest cities, originated as a Phoenician settlement between the 8th and 12th centuries BCE and later evolved into a Punic and then a Roman town. The houses are a testament to the wealth of Utica in the Roman period. These insulae, like those in other Roman cities, provided housing for many urban residents, featuring shops on the ground floor and apartments of varying size and luxury on the upper levels.
