Ruins of a Roman amphitheatre in ancient Thysdrus, photograph by Carole Raddato, El Djem, Tunisia, 16 February, 2023.
The Roman Amphitheatre of El Djem in Tunisia was constructed around 238 CE in the ancient city of Thysdrus, located in the Roman province of Africa Proconsularis. The monument could seat up to 35,000 spectators, and its sheer size makes it one of the largest amphitheatres in the Roman world, comparable only to the Colosseum in Rome and the arena of Capua.
