Juana of Austria with a Young Girl, painting by Sofonisba Anguissola, Italy, c.1561.
Juana of Austria (1535–1573), daughter of Emperor Charles V, married Prince Juan of Portugal and later served as the regent of Spain whislt her brother, King Phillip II, was in England. Sofonisba was a well known painter and teacher in the Spanish court and likely secured this commission through these connections.
