La Malinche mediates discussions between Tlaxcallans and Hernán Cortés, mural by Desiderio Hernández Xochitiotzin, photograph by Wolfgang Sauber, Tlaxcala, 28 March, 2008.

The Tlaxcallans are an indigenous Nahua people from central Mexico. In the early 16th century, they allied with the Spanish in their war against the Aztecs and were instrumental in the collapse of the Aztec Empire. La Malinche is seen here in her capacity as Hernán Cortés' interpreter and diplomat.
