Ruins of the ancient Roman theatre at Dougga, photograph by Carole Raddato, Tunisia, 04 October, 2024.

The Theatre of Dougga, located in modern Tunisia, was completed around 166 CE during the reign of Antoninus Pius. The construction was funded by Publius Marcius Quadratus, a member of one of the wealthiest families in the city. Modest in size, the theatre could accommodate 3,500 spectators across its 19 semicircular tiers, which were carved into the hillside. The stage featured a central semicircular niche flanked by square niches on either side. The seating area was divided by barriers and stairways, allowing access from the top or the sides.
