Portrait of Juan Seguín, oil on canvas painting by Thomas Jefferson Wright, 1838.
The only known portrait of Juan Nepomuceno Seguín (1806-1890), this painting depicts the Tejano (Mexican Texan) leader who joined the Texas Revolution, serving at the Alamo and as a calvary commander in the Battle of San Jacinto in 1836. After the war was won, Seguín became the only Tejano to serve as senator in the newborn Republic of Texas, where he advocated for a bilingual government.
