Ruins of the Church of El Alamo, illustration originally included in Gleason's Pictorial Drawing-Room Companion, 1854.
The Alamo, originally a Spanish mission, was a fortress garrisoned first by the Spanish, then the Mexican Army after the Mexican War of Independence, and later, most famously, by Texian forces during the Texas Revolution. Their defeat at the Battle of the Alamo spurred both a recruitment surge for Texas independence and a panic for the civilian population, who fled eastward in what became known as the "Runaway Scrape."
