Battle of Stone River, lithographic print by Kurz & Allison, c. 1891.
The Battle of Stones River (misspelled here in the print), otherwise known as the Second Battle of Murfreesboro, was an American Civil War engagement fought in the final hours of 1862 and the first days of the new year in 1863. Although Union forces ultimately emerged victorious, the number of dead and wounded for both sides was enormous, with nearly one-third of all soldiers either casualties or missing.
