Casualties at Shiloh, watercolour by Adolph Metzner, 1862.
Adolph Metzner (1834-1918) was a German-born immigrant to the United States who enlisted in the Union army soon after the American Civil War broke out, where he would serve three years with the 32nd Indiana Volunteer Infantry Regiment. A talented artist, he drew, painted, and sketched the life of soldiers and what they saw. While his work was often humorous, at the Battle of Shiloh in April 1862, he recorded the unvarnished brutality of war.
