Oluale Kossola, photograph included in Emma Langdon Roche's Historic Sketches of the South, c. 1914.

Kossola (c. 1841-1935), later known as Cudjo Lewis, a Yoruba man of what is now Benin, was abducted by slavers in April 1860 and secretly transported to Mobile, Alabama, on the slave ship Clotilda. He would go on to become one of the founders of Africatown, a husband to Abile (a fellow survivor of the Clotilda), and a father to six children.
