A c. 1860 portrait by Léon Cogniet of Madame Barbe-Nicole Clicquot-Ponsardin (1777-1866) who made many developments in the Champagne-making process and was responsible for innovative marketing strategies for the sparkling wine. She is better known today simply as the Widow Clicquot or Veuve Clicquot, after which the Champagne brand is named.
