Learn about the rich history of North America through the legends and tales of those who inhabited the land first in Voices of the Winds.

This wonderfully appealing anthology gathers
more than 130 Native American legends, many told to the authors by elder storytellers and
tribal historians. The legends feature a broad array of mythical figures, such as Thunderbird, Coyote, and Raven, as well as human-like characters “The
Girl Who Married the Moon” and “Two Brothers Who Became Stars.”

Organized by region—with tales from the Northwest, Southwest, Great Plains, Southeast, and Northeast—the legends are drawn from many tribes, including the Wasco, Aleut, Apache, Yosemite, Cheyenne, Sioux, Hopi, Navajo, Chippewa, Cherokee and others, and are introduced by an informative headnote, accompanied by a variety of evocative line-art drawings. The stories include:

  • The Bridge of the Gods, Wasco
  • Raven’s Great Adventure, Alaska
  • Song of the Horses, Navaho
  • Origin of Fire, Jicarilla-Apache
  • The Corn Ceremony, Hidatsa
  • The Great Serpent and the Great Flood, Chippewa-Ojibwa
  • The Origin of Earth, Tuskegee
  • The Legend of the Bear Family, Penobscot
  • The Origin of the Iroquois Nations, Iroquois

Get to know the first peoples of North America through these stories from their rich oral traditions.

Inauthentic Reflection of Native American Folklore
While reading the stories in this book of Native American legends, I found that far too many of them have European influences and do not reflect an authentic Native American voice.

Really cool, glad now a lot of native legends are written down and preserved outside of memory. I especially liked the way the natives used imagery, reading it you occasionally get some pretty cool celestial scenes of people transcending into the stars and whatnot. Would be excellent to read with your kids but also is good for people who want to understand the native cultural perspective rather than just the raw history. I read this for a few episodes of my podcast, Hard Fried History.

My hubby is of Cherokee descent and love reading about the Cherokee and Native Americans. A friend had called me about seeing this book at a store and thought I might want it for hubby. I told him I would look on Amazon for it. I showed it to hubby and he said it sounded very interesting so I bought it for him.

I never go into details or plots of books we have read. I like to know if a book is good or not but do not want to read a book report.

Hubby is reading it now and said he loves it!

In attempting to understand humankind, I find it instructive to study the religions, legends, and myths of people around the world. This provides a basis upon which to then study their more formal cultural products: their language, art, literature, and science. This book provides a look into the mind-worlds that developed among the original inhabitants of this part of the world. I highly recommend it as an adventure of exploration into an oft-forgotten frontier.

Great anthology of native american fables and stories from all different regions of the US. It does not just focus on one geographical area, but tries to cover all tribal zones. This may be the only drawback in that because it covers so many areas and tribes, they are limited in the stories they tell from each tribe. None the less, it is worth the used price I paid for interesting stories of regional and continental origination stories.

This book was a great treasure I found online while shopping for my dad for Christmas, he loves everything to do with Native American culture since it is a part of bloodline and family history. The book arrived yesterday and I was very impressed! The stories and facts inside were just breathe-taking! There is so much great information with the stories, pictures, and facts. I suggest this to anyone!

5.0 out of 5 stars Good source for Native myths and legends

The Book is filled with many legends and stories from a many tribes all over North American. Being Native American, it is nice to read the Myth and legends that were told to our ancestors. Very spiritual and attuned to nature.

Also the book is a hard exterior copy which feels nice to hold and keep the pages from being accidently folded
