2000 years ago, Aventicum — present-day Avenches, Switzerland — was the capital of Roman Helvetia. The Emperor Augustus founded the Roman city of Aventicum on the site of the Helvetian capital, and it was to be in its heyday in the 2nd century CE when it had over 20,000 inhabitants. Avenches has a well-preserved Roman amphitheater, which rivals those of Augusta Raurica and Martigny in Switzerland.
