بلخ یکی از استان های شاهنشاهی ایران بود که امروزه در کشورهای افغانستان، ازبکستان و تاجیکستان واقع شده است.

پس از شکست داریوش سوم پادشاه هخامنشی، بلخ مقاومتی فراوانی در برابر اسکندر و سپاه او از خود نشان داد و رهبر بلخی ها در آن نبرد بسوس بود که خود را جانشین خودخوانده داریوش هخامنشی در نظر گرفته بود. اسکندر با مشقت فراوان سرانجام توانست در بین سالهای ۳۲۹ تا ۳۲۷ قبل از میلاد و با اتکا به نیروهای کمکی محلی آن خطه را فتح کند. اسکندر در خلال اقامت خود در بلخ با [روشنک](https://www.worldhistory.org/trans/fa/1-10600/) که دختر اشرافی بلخی بود ازدواج کرد تا بتواند بر آن شهر تسلط بیشتری داشته باشد.

پس از مرگ اسکندر، بلخ به بخشی از امپراطوری سلوکی تبدیل شد. سختیهای فراوانی که پادشاهان سلوکی برای فتح آن شهر در پیش روی خود می دیدند و همینطور حملات بطلمیوس دوم پادشاه سلوکی مصر برای دیودوت، ساتراپ بلخ این موقعیت را فراهم آورد تا خود را به عنوان حاکم مستقل بلخ معرفی کند ( حدود ۲۵۵ پیش از میلاد) و سپس آن حاکم منطقه سغد را نیز فتح نمود و قلمرو یونانی-هندی را بنیان گذاشت.
