الشرق الأدنى من وجهة نظر عُلماء الآثار والمؤرخين القدماء هي المنطقة الواقعة في جنوب غرب آسيا، على وجه التحديد هي المنطقة التي يحيط بها البحر الأبيض المتوسط، البحر الأسود، بحر قزوين، البحر الأحمر والخليج العربي/الفارسي. تضم هذه المنطقة في الوقت الحالي دولة إسرائيل/فلسطين ، لبنان، سوريا، تركيا، الأردن، العراق وغرب إيران. وأيضاً ضمَ بعض العلماء قبرص وجنوب القوقاز (جورجيا ، أرمينيا وأذربيجان) في تعريفهم للشرق الأدنىى وهما على الأرجح "شرق البحر الأبيض المتوسط" و "القوقاز". بالتأكيد تعتبر مصر جزءاً من تاريخ الشرق الأدنى القديم ولكن على الأغلب تم استبعادُها من التعريفات التقليدية عن الشرق الأدنى. تم أستخدام مُصطلح "الشرق الأوسط" من قبل العلماء السياسيين والصحفيين المُعاصرين للإشارة إلى نفس المنطقة الجغرافية. على العموم تُعتبر منطقة الشرق الأدنى "مهد للحضارة" لأن العديد من المعالم البارزة في تاريخ البشرية أنبثقت من هذه المنطقة والمُتمثلة بالزراعة والكتابة والمُدن القديمة.
