## Image Caption

[Temple](https://www.worldhistory.org/temple/) 24 at the [Maya](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/Maya/) site of [Chacchoben](https://www.worldhistory.org/Chacchoben/), c. 700 CE. The first temple one encounters upon entering the grounds. The extant structure was built upon a much older temple which had been built over an even older one. This was in keeping with Maya policy of the new king building his temples and palaces on top of his predecessor's, thus replacing him in both time and space.
