## Image Caption

Artist's depiction of the Norse goddess Skadi and her husband, the [god](https://www.worldhistory.org/God/) Njord, on their way to Njord's home of Nóatún. Although Skadi enjoys the mountains where she hunts and skis and Njord likes his dark, damp cave by the water, they try a compromise of living in each other’s residence for nine days at a time. However, Skadi cannot endure it and eventually leaves him for her mountain home. Made by Friedrich Wilhelm Heine (1845-1921) after an original by Friedrich Wilhelm Engelhard (1813-1902).
